Bratislava, December 28, 2024 – The Europe Today: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Friday that Slovakia is ready to host peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, extending an offer to facilitate dialogue amidst the ongoing conflict.
During his recent visit to Moscow, Fico privately floated the proposal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since his election in 2023, Fico has been critical of the European Union and NATO’s approach to the war, advocating instead for a ceasefire and peace talks.
“If someone wants to organize a peace negotiation in the Slovak Republic, we will be ready and hospitable,” Fico stated in a Facebook post.
He further accused Ukraine of causing significant economic damage to the European Union, including Slovakia, by halting Russian natural gas transit, remarking that EU leadership appeared indifferent to these repercussions.
Russian President Putin responded positively to Fico’s offer, describing Slovakia as “an acceptable option” due to its neutral stance in the conflict.
The possibility of peace talks has gained momentum following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election last month. Trump has pledged to end the conflict swiftly, although specific plans remain unclear.
Moscow has expressed willingness for a negotiated solution that aligns with its interests and recognizes the “realities on the ground.” However, Ukraine has rejected any peace settlement that involves recognizing Russian control over the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Crimea. Kiev also remains firm on its NATO membership aspirations, which Russia strongly opposes.
