Tashkent, January 24, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a telephone conversation with António Costa, President of the European Council, to discuss key issues on the bilateral and regional agenda.
During the call, President Mirziyoyev warmly congratulated António Costa on his election as President of the European Council, extending his best wishes for success in this prominent role.
The conversation highlighted the remarkable progress achieved in Uzbekistan-European Union relations in recent years, with cooperation reaching an unprecedented level and expanding dynamically across multiple priority sectors.
It was noted that Uzbekistan’s trade turnover with EU member states exceeded €6 billion in 2024, while the portfolio of joint projects with European companies reached €30 billion. Strategic agreements, including a landmark partnership in critical mineral resources signed last year, have further solidified the relationship.
Additionally, fruitful collaboration is ongoing in the areas of transport and digital connectivity, the green economy, and cultural exchanges. Both leaders expressed optimism for the expedited signing of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, which is expected to provide a significant boost to the development of bilateral ties.
The two leaders also discussed international and regional issues, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening Central Asia-European Union relations. In this context, preparations for the first Central Asia–EU Summit, scheduled to take place in Samarkand in April 2025, were reviewed.
The conversation reaffirmed the shared commitment of Uzbekistan and the European Council to fostering deeper cooperation and addressing common challenges on the international stage.
