Kuala Lumpur, March 25, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised the sacrifices of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), emphasizing their vital role as the foundation of national peace and prosperity.
In a message marking the 218th Police Day, Anwar acknowledged the tireless efforts of police personnel in safeguarding the country, particularly as the nation observes the holy month of Ramadan. He urged Malaysians, especially Muslims, to reflect on and appreciate the contributions of the police force that enables them to worship and live in peace.
“As Malaysians, it is our responsibility to appreciate the efforts of PDRM in maintaining peace. We are grateful for all the services and sacrifices made for our beloved Malaysia,” he stated in a Facebook post on Tuesday (March 25).
Anwar expressed his hope that the police force would continue to excel in their duties and that Malaysia would remain a nation of lasting peace and prosperity. He highlighted the significance of Police Day as an occasion to honor the dedication and commitment of officers who serve with loyalty and determination.
Reflecting on the history of PDRM, Anwar noted that its origins date back to March 25, 1807, with the formation of the Home Guard. He further traced the evolution of law enforcement in Malaysia to the Melaka Sultanate era, where the Temenggung played a key role in enforcing customary and Syariah laws. The modern police force later expanded with the establishment of the Straits Settlements Police Force in 1871.
The Prime Minister also underscored the critical role of PDRM during the Communist insurgency (1948-1960) and in countering subsequent security threats. He commended the Special Branch for its intelligence-gathering and operational expertise, which played a crucial role in neutralizing threats and ensuring national stability.
On a regional level, Anwar highlighted PDRM’s ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation with ASEAN nations through platforms such as ASEANAPOL and INTERPOL. These collaborations are essential in addressing transnational crime and cyber security challenges, reinforcing regional stability.
As Malaysia commemorates this meaningful day, Anwar reiterated his appreciation for the unwavering dedication of police personnel in upholding law and order, ensuring that the country remains safe and prosperous for all citizens.
