Massive Fire in Sandakan Destroys Up to 1,000 Homes, Over 9,000 Residents Affected

Sandakan

Sandakan, April 19, 2026 – The Europe Today: A devastating early-morning fire swept through Kampung Bahagia in Batu Sapi, Sandakan, on Sunday, destroying up to 1,000 homes and affecting more than 9,000 residents in one of the worst fire incidents in the area’s history.

The blaze erupted at approximately 1:30am and spread rapidly through the densely packed settlement of wooden stilt houses, leaving residents with little time to escape as flames engulfed entire rows of homes.

Firefighting operations were severely hampered by narrow access routes that prevented fire engines from reaching the site directly, while low tide conditions restricted access to nearby water sources. Strong winds and the close proximity of houses further intensified the fire.

Around 35 firefighting personnel from Sandakan and Kinabatangan stations battled the blaze using water tankers and a nearby factory hydrant. Authorities confirmed that the fire was brought under control shortly after 4:00am.

Sandakan district police chief Assistant Commissioner George Abd Rakman described the incident as “large-scale and heartbreaking,” noting that approximately 1,200 housing units were located in the area, with nearly 1,000 affected.

“This incident involves around 9,007 residents,” he said, adding that the area was officially declared a disaster zone at about 4:00am.

Three temporary evacuation centres have been established at PPR Sandakan, the PPR Batu Sapi hall, and SK Kampung Gas, where authorities are continuing to register displaced residents and coordinate relief efforts.

No fatalities have been reported so far, although several individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to rescue belongings or assist others during the blaze.

Officials confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Department.

Village chief Sharif Hassim Sharif Titing said authorities are still working on arrangements for displaced residents, particularly those without transportation.

“Some have been directed to the PPR, but many lack vehicles. We are awaiting further arrangements,” he said.

Sekong assemblyman Alias Sani assured that efforts are underway to ensure swift delivery of assistance to affected families, adding that coordination with all relevant agencies is being prioritised.
