Chinese Premier Focuses on River Protection, Child Welfare, and Nuclear Safety at Executive Meeting

Beijing, April 28, 2025 — The Europe Today: Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Sunday presided over an executive meeting of the State Council, which made key arrangements to strengthen river and lake protection efforts and enhance measures for safeguarding the welfare of children in difficulties.The meeting underscored the continuous improvement of China’s aquatic ecosystems and emphasized the need for a targeted, scientific, and law-based approach to pollution control. Participants called for coordinated efforts to improve water resources, aquatic environments, and aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on addressing problems at their source, strengthening monitoring and source-tracing mechanisms, and curbing excessive emissions.In addition to environmental protection, the meeting highlighted the importance of advancing welfare protections for children in need. The council stressed that children’s development must be prioritized, urging for greater efforts to enhance service systems that support children’s living conditions, medical care, education, and mental health.

The meeting also reviewed and approved in principle the draft healthcare security law, deciding to submit it to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress for further deliberation. The law aims to strengthen China’s healthcare security framework and improve the well-being of the population.Furthermore, the State Council approved the development of new nuclear power projects, including a major project in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province. The meeting emphasized the imperative of ensuring absolute safety in nuclear power development, with a directive that all units must be constructed and operated according to the highest global safety standards. Efforts to enhance safety supervision and capacity building were also called for.

Sunday’s meeting reaffirmed the Chinese government’s commitment to sustainable development, social welfare, and the safe advancement of strategic industries.
