Vienna, April 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Vienna, establishing a structured strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
The agreement seeks to enhance collaboration particularly in political and economic domains, while reinforcing regular consultations and exchanges on bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.
In a statement, Morocco’s Foreign Ministry said the MoU reflects both countries’ shared belief that dialogue and information exchange will contribute to deepening mutual understanding and advancing their partnership.
The agreement builds on a long-standing diplomatic relationship between Morocco and Austria, which marked the 240th anniversary of diplomatic ties on February 28, 2023. The ministry noted that the MoU aligns with principles outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, underscoring the historic and privileged nature of relations between the two nations.
Austria also expressed support for Morocco’s efforts to promote a renewed model of South-South cooperation, recognizing Rabat’s role as a key diplomatic actor in Africa. The two sides signaled interest in fostering trilateral cooperation involving Austria, Morocco, and partner countries across the African continent.
Both countries emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the European Union and its southern neighbors, particularly within the broader Euro-African framework.
During the visit, Austria voiced support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which backs ongoing efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy plan for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution.
Austria further acknowledged Morocco’s willingness to clarify the implementation of autonomy under its sovereignty, aligning with growing international support for Rabat’s position.
The MoU marks a significant step in reinforcing diplomatic engagement and broadening cooperation between Morocco and Austria amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
