José Mourinho Set for Real Madrid Return as Benfica Confirms Transfer Agreement

Madrid, June 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: Portuguese football manager José Mourinho is set to make a return to Real Madrid after Benfica announced that it had reached an agreement with the Spanish club regarding the veteran coach.

According to reports, Benfica will receive a compensation fee of €15 million (approximately SEK 165 million) for Mourinho’s move to the Spanish giants.

The appointment comes shortly after Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez secured re-election and publicly confirmed Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, leading the club to several domestic and international successes.

“We are proud to have the best players in the world, and proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a ‘madridista’ like José Mourinho,” Pérez said in remarks published on the club’s official website.

Earlier in the day, Real Madrid announced the departure of interim head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who had overseen the team for the past four months.

Mourinho, one of football’s most decorated managers, is expected to begin a new chapter with Real Madrid as the club seeks to strengthen its position at the top of European football.
