Azerbaijan Elected to UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for First Time

New York, June 25, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan has secured a seat on the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) for the first time, marking a significant achievement in the country’s engagement with international human rights institutions.

According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country’s candidate was elected to the CRC for the 2027–2031 term during the 21st Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child held in New York on June 23.

Farid Adilov, a doctoral candidate at the University of Essex nominated by Azerbaijan, won election in the first round of voting with the support of 130 member states. The election was conducted in a highly competitive environment, with candidates from 16 countries contesting nine available seats on the committee.

The Ministry noted that this is the first time an Azerbaijani citizen will serve on the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, a treaty body responsible for monitoring the implementation of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child worldwide.

The committee consists of 18 independent experts elected by States Parties to assess compliance with the convention and provide recommendations aimed at strengthening the protection and promotion of children’s rights globally.

Azerbaijan’s successful election is being viewed as recognition of the country’s growing role in international cooperation on child rights and humanitarian issues.
