Sweden to Face France in FIFA World Cup Round of 16 After Spain Defeats Uruguay

Stockholm, June 27, 2026 – The Europe Today: Sweden will take on France in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Uruguay on Saturday, confirming the knockout stage fixtures.

The highly anticipated clash between Sweden and France is scheduled to be played in New Jersey on Tuesday at 11:00 p.m. Swedish local time.

Sweden progressed to the knockout phase as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams, following a campaign that included a victory over Tunisia, a heavy defeat to the Netherlands, and a draw against Japan.

The Scandinavian side now faces one of the tournament favourites, France, featuring a star-studded squad led by Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé.

In Saturday’s decisive encounter, Spain took the lead in the 42nd minute through Alex Baena, a goal that ultimately proved enough to seal the victory and set up Sweden’s meeting with France.

Uruguay suffered a setback during the match when midfielder Manuel Ugarte was forced off the field on a stretcher after sustaining an injury. In an effort to overturn the deficit, Uruguay introduced Federico Viñas in place of star midfielder Federico Valverde, but the substitution failed to alter the outcome as Spain held on for the win.

Sweden will now aim to produce an upset against the 2018 world champions as they seek a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
