Emomali Rahmon is a visionary statesman who has raised Tajikistan’s international peace diplomacy to new heights.
The resolution was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly unanimously, in 2027-2036, it will become the International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations, which is a great diplomatic success for Tajikistan, and a tribute to the foresight of the President, Emomali Rahmon. The resolution was initiated by the President of Tajikistan, highlighting the country’s rising international profile and its firm commitment to fostering peace, dialogue and sustainable development at a global level, where geopolitical tensions are rising.
President Rahmon has always emphasized that peace is not just the lack of a conflict but its basis is on fairness, respect, equality and opportunities for everyone. This is the philosophy of Tajikistan’s foreign policy which now has been recognized in the world by the United Nations. The newly adopted decade offers a global agenda for increasing intergenerational solidarity, dialogue, preventing conflicts and building cooperation between nations.
The resolution also highlights Tajikistan’s role as a positive player in international diplomacy. In recent years, President Rahmon has successfully built the country’s reputation as a prominent player in the agenda that goes beyond regional issues, such as those relating to water security, glacier preservation, sustainable development and climate resilience, and now international peacebuilding. This is just one example of the growing number of successful multilateral projects in which Tajikistan plays an important role, regardless of its size.
The resolution was passed as Tajikistan celebrates its National Unity Day, which is also the date of the country’s transition from conflict to stability. President Rahmon’s role in the national reconciliation process has turned Tajikistan into a stable country and given him experience that he is now using for his international efforts to encourage dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. The link between Tajikistan’s internal stability and its external peace-building efforts helps to give Tajikistan’s message more credibility and authenticity.
The resolution’s focus on future generations goes beyond the conventional realm of diplomacy, embodying a vision forward. It inspires governments, international organisations, educational institutions, civil society and the youth to act together to develop societies based on tolerance, reconciliation and human dignity. President Rahmon’s focus on youth and tomorrow’s generations in the context of peace is in line with the United Nations’ vision of sustainable peace and inclusive development.
The initiative has been commended by international observers as a timely measure to address an increasingly fractured world in which armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change and growing social polarization are affecting daily life. The Tajik proposal does not only aim at conflict management but preventive diplomacy, intercultural dialogue, confidence building and durable investment in social cohesion, which are all in tune with the aims of the UN Charter.
The effectiveness of the implementation of the “International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations” thus goes beyond a diplomatic achievement. It reflects President Emomali Rahmon’s constant efforts to make Tajikistan a responsible player on the international stage and an advocate of international peace. His steadfast leadership and forward-looking diplomacy have proven that countries of all sizes can play a significant role in solving the world’s most pressing issues.
President Rahmon’s efforts will be a legacy that will endure through the 10 years starting in 2027 as the international community embarks on its own decade.President Rahmon’s initiative will be a legacy that will continue for the 10 years ahead starting in 2027 as the international community is on its own 10-year journey.
