Baku, July 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova held talks with Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives of Ethiopia Tagesse Chaffo during her visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding parliamentary and bilateral cooperation.
Tagesse Chaffo highlighted Ethiopia’s strong interest in developing relations with Azerbaijan, expressing confidence that Sahiba Gafarova’s visit would contribute to further strengthening cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
Sahiba Gafarova said that her visit reflected the importance Azerbaijan attaches to its relations with Ethiopia and emphasized the need to further enhance cooperation across various fields.
During the meeting, the sides recalled the visits of Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Azerbaijan, noting that discussions held with President Ilham Aliyev had provided new impetus to the development of bilateral ties.
The officials also highlighted the significance of the January 2026 visit to Ethiopia by Leyla Aliyeva, noting its contribution to strengthening humanitarian and development cooperation between the two nations.
The two sides emphasized that Azerbaijan and Ethiopia possess significant potential for expanding collaboration in tourism, business, mutual investment, culture and humanitarian fields.
Particular attention was given to the successful implementation of Azerbaijan’s ASAN xidmət model in Ethiopia, which the officials described as an important example of bilateral cooperation and a symbol of Azerbaijan’s contribution to institutional development in the country.
The meeting also featured an extensive exchange of views on further strengthening interparliamentary relations. The sides stressed the importance of reciprocal visits by parliamentary speakers, lawmakers and members of friendship groups in enhancing dialogue and cooperation.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova invited Tagesse Chaffo to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan, an invitation that was accepted with gratitude by the Ethiopian Speaker.
The officials expressed readiness to expand cooperation between parliamentary committees and administrative bodies, while Tagesse Chaffo noted that Ethiopia is currently implementing legislative reforms and attaches importance to Azerbaijan’s experience in this area.
The two sides also underscored the importance of continued cooperation within international platforms, including the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and other international organizations.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Azerbaijan and Ethiopia to deepening parliamentary diplomacy and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
