Jakarta, August 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to end oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports within three years as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s energy independence.
Speaking at the launch of the 100-gigawatt peak (GWp) solar power programme in Jembrana, Bali, on Tuesday, Prabowo said Indonesia should no longer depend on imported energy and called for accelerated development of domestic energy resources.
The President said the target would be supported by the construction of 100 GW of solar power capacity and geothermal plants, development of domestic gas fields and increased national oil production.
According to Prabowo, the initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to build a self-reliant Indonesia that is less vulnerable to developments and conditions in other countries.
The government aims to complete the construction of the new 100 GW electricity capacity within three years. Prabowo noted that the planned capacity would exceed Indonesia’s current total installed electricity capacity of around 88 GW generated from various energy sources, including coal, oil, gas and geothermal power.
“Our target is 100 gigawatts within three years,” the President said, emphasizing the scale and urgency of the programme.
Prabowo stressed that renewable energy development must be accompanied by efforts to strengthen domestic oil and gas production. He called for continued increases in oil lifting, expansion of gas fields and greater utilization of Indonesia’s geothermal resources.
The President described energy independence as an important foundation for national sovereignty and urged members of his Red and White Cabinet to work diligently and decisively to manage the country’s natural resources for the welfare of the people.
Prabowo expressed confidence that the government could achieve the ambitious energy targets in less than three years, underscoring his administration’s commitment to reducing Indonesia’s dependence on imported energy.
