Islamabad, September 25, 2026 – The Europe Today: On September 24, 2026, Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Oumer H. Oba, and Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood, jointly launched the Ethiopian Green Legacy Initiative at the university premises on Thursday.
The initiative aims to promote friendship between Ethiopia and Pakistan through environmental cooperation, symbolized by the planting of seedlings representing fraternity between the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad and AIOU.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Oumer H. Oba held an interactive session with AIOU faculty members and highlighted the importance of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative in addressing climate change, restoring forest cover, strengthening food security and promoting a green economy.
The Ambassador also briefed participants on Ethiopia’s historical relations with Pakistan, as well as the country’s economic growth, demographic potential, cultural heritage and tourism opportunities.
He called for the establishment of institutional linkages between Ethiopian and Pakistani educational institutions to enhance cooperation in scientific and vocational education, joint research in agricultural sciences, and faculty and student exchange programmes.
Dr. Oba further highlighted the ongoing expansion of Ethiopia’s education sector, including the increasing number of educational institutions and the country’s rising literacy rate. He urged academic institutions to contribute actively to strengthening bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Pakistan.
Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood appreciated Ethiopia’s socio-economic development and underscored the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries. He expressed AIOU’s commitment to advancing educational cooperation with Ethiopian institutions.
The Vice Chancellor also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening relations with friendly African countries, including Ethiopia.
The session concluded with both sides expressing their resolve to build on the existing momentum in bilateral relations by developing institutional partnerships between AIOU and its counterparts in Ethiopia, particularly in education, research and academic exchange.
