President Ilham Aliyev, IJF President Discuss Development of Judo in Azerbaijan

Baku, October 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on October 3 received Ladislau-Marius Vizer, President of the International Judo Federation (IJF), and presented him with the “Dostlug” Order in recognition of his contributions to the development of judo in Azerbaijan and worldwide.

During the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude to Vizer for his support for the development of judo in Azerbaijan and for facilitating the hosting of the World Judo Championships in Baku. He noted that Azerbaijan would host the prestigious sporting event for the second time and expressed confidence that the championship would be organised at a high standard.

The Azerbaijani president highlighted judo as one of the country’s most popular and successful sports in terms of medal achievements, emphasising the accomplishments of Azerbaijani judokas at major international competitions.

He also underscored the importance of modern sports infrastructure established in Baku and across the country’s regions in contributing to Azerbaijan’s sporting success.

For his part, Ladislau-Marius Vizer thanked President Ilham Aliyev for receiving him and praised the excellent organisation of the World Judo Championships in Baku. He also congratulated Azerbaijani judokas on their medal-winning performances at various sporting events.

The IJF president expressed appreciation for President Aliyev’s continued support for the development of judo in Azerbaijan.

The two sides also expressed satisfaction with Azerbaijan’s active membership in the International Judo Federation and exchanged views on prospects for strengthening cooperation between the IJF and the Azerbaijan Judo Federation.

Following the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev presented Vizer with the “Dostlug” Order.

Vizer expressed gratitude for the honour, which was conferred by presidential order in recognition of his productive efforts and contributions to the development of judo in Azerbaijan and around the world.
