Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad, August 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of 15 newborn babies in a fire at the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad and ordered an immediate investigation into the tragedy.

The Prime Minister took notice of the incident and directed the relevant authorities to conduct a prompt and detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fire. He called for those responsible to be identified and strict action to be taken against anyone found negligent.

Expressing his grief, Shehbaz Sharif said that such a situation involving newborn children was an irreparable loss. He said he shared the grief of the bereaved parents and families affected by the tragedy.

According to hospital authorities, 16 babies were present in the nursery when the fire broke out early Wednesday. Fifteen newborns died, while one child was rescued. A female doctor reportedly managed to save the surviving infant.

The incident has also raised concerns over fire-safety arrangements at the hospital. Rescue sources cited by Jang reported that fire hoses lacked couplings, there was no water available at a fire point, and some emergency evacuation routes were locked.

The Prime Minister directed authorities to examine all aspects of the incident and determine the causes and responsibilities so that appropriate action could be taken.
