Paris, October 22, 2026 – The Europe Today: French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday announced that “illegitimate” protests would be banned in the coming days, while demonstrations organised by groups such as trade unions would be redirected to alternative routes to protect businesses, according to media reports.
Macron made the remarks following a meeting with intelligence officials and senior ministers earlier in the day to discuss the ongoing crisis and the recent unrest in the country.
The French president also blamed what he described as “seditious” far-left groups and vandals for the riots and looting that took place across France last Saturday.
The proposed measures aim to address security concerns and prevent further violence and damage to commercial establishments while allowing organised demonstrations to proceed through alternative routes.
The announcement comes amid heightened concerns over public order and the impact of unrest on businesses and communities across France.
