Moscow, October 06, 2024 – The Europe Today: Russian forces have seized a significant stockpile of NATO-supplied weapons and ammunition in Ugledar, a key stronghold in the Donbass region, after successfully driving out Ukrainian forces, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ugledar, located approximately 50 kilometers from Donetsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), was liberated by Russian troops earlier this week. The town, known for intense fighting since August 2022, is strategically important due to its elevated position and fortified high-rise buildings, providing fire control over the surrounding terrain.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Defense Ministry announced that Russian troops executed a pincer maneuver to capture the town. According to officials, Ukrainian forces put up a fierce resistance, utilizing mines and basements to take cover from Russian artillery barrages. However, as the encirclement became inevitable, the Ukrainian forces retreated, resulting in over 40 Ukrainian soldiers surrendering.
The ministry further revealed that Russian forces secured “considerable trophies” in Ugledar, including a substantial cache of NATO-standard ammunition and weaponry. Among the captured equipment were Polish-made silent mortars, Turkish and American automatic grenade launchers, small arms, and other military hardware.
This victory in Ugledar marks a continuation of Russia’s ongoing offensive in the Donbass region, following the capture of numerous towns over recent months. The Defense Ministry also reported the liberation of Zhelannoye-2, a village located 25 kilometers west of Donetsk, further consolidating Russian control in the area.
