Beirut, January 17, 2025 – The Europe Today: Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Friday that French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s new government under Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam.
The pledge came following a meeting between Mikati and Macron, who arrived earlier in the day at Beirut’s airport for a one-day visit.
In a statement issued by the Lebanese Prime Minister’s Office, Mikati highlighted the discussions with Macron, emphasizing the French leader’s focus on addressing Lebanon’s economic challenges and reconstruction needs.
“We discussed the current challenges and the importance of continuing support for Lebanon on all fronts—economically and in reconstruction efforts,” Mikati stated.
Macron expressed a willingness to organize a follow-up conference, similar to the Paris meeting held in October, to secure additional aid for Lebanon’s military and provide relief to displaced populations. He also voiced support for a trust fund initiative in partnership with the World Bank aimed at the reconstruction of southern Lebanon, an area heavily impacted by Israeli airstrikes.
Regarding Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, Mikati stated that Macron plans to meet with American and French officials to review the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the cease-fire and related measures. Mikati also noted Macron’s assurance that Israeli violations are being monitored and are expected to cease by the end of the 60-day withdrawal period later this month.
Macron’s itinerary also includes meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam.
This visit marks Macron’s first trip to Lebanon since President Joseph Aoun was elected, ending over two years of political impasse in the country. According to the French Presidency, the visit aims to reinforce Lebanese sovereignty and stability amidst ongoing challenges.
