Trump Announces Landmark Trade Deal with European Union

Turnberry, July 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the successful conclusion of a new trade agreement with the European Union, following a brief but high-stakes meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, according to media reports.

The agreement was finalized just days before President Trump’s deadline for either reaching a trade deal or imposing higher tariffs on European goods exported to the United States.

“This is the biggest deal ever,” President Trump declared following the one-hour meeting. He emphasized the intensive nature of the negotiations, which had been ongoing for months, and credited both sides for their persistence.

“We had to do some hard work,” he said. “But now we have achieved it.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who made an urgent trip to Scotland for the meeting, also expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “Thank you very much also for the negotiations that we had many times on the way to our goal,” she noted.

Under the terms of the agreement, the European Union has committed to purchasing $750 billion worth of U.S. energy supplies. Additionally, Europe is expected to invest $600 billion more in the U.S. economy than originally planned.

As part of the deal, the United States will impose a 15 percent tariff on imports from the EU, including automobiles. However, certain sectors remain excluded from the agreement — notably pharmaceuticals, as well as steel and aluminum. President Trump confirmed that these excluded items will continue to be subject to a 50 percent tariff.

The deal represents a major development in transatlantic economic relations and comes at a critical time amid ongoing global trade tensions and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
