Brussels, October 23, 2025 — The Europe Today: Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Badr Abdelatty, ahead of the first EU–Egypt Summit scheduled to take place in Brussels.
Minister Toiu welcomed the convening of the summit, held under the framework of the Declaration for a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership between the European Union and Egypt. She reiterated Romania’s consistent support for strengthening cooperation with Egypt within the European context.
During the discussions, the two ministers reviewed several areas of bilateral collaboration, focusing on political-diplomatic, economic, commercial, and cultural ties. Minister Toiu commended the remarkable level of Romanian–Egyptian relations and emphasized the importance of further enhancing dialogue in sectors of mutual interest. She noted that bilateral trade exchanges surpassed 1 billion euros in 2024 and expressed appreciation for Romania’s designation as the guest of honor at the Cairo International Book Fair in January 2026.
Minister Toiu also acknowledged Egypt’s vital role in promoting stability and security in the Middle East and Africa, as well as its significant contribution to mediation efforts in the Gaza conflict, which resulted in the release of hostages and the establishment of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. She conveyed Romania’s interest in participating actively in Gaza’s reconstruction process and reaffirmed Bucharest’s readiness to coordinate closely with Cairo on this issue.
The inaugural EU–Egypt Summit, taking place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in Brussels, aims to deepen political and economic cooperation between the European Union and Egypt while promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
Egypt will be represented by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, while Romanian President Nicușor Dan will also attend the meeting. The European Union will be represented by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Summit discussions are expected to cover a wide range of global and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, developments in Ukraine, multilateral cooperation, trade and migration, and international security.
