Bucharest to Hold Memorial March Honouring Victims of 1989 Romanian Revolution

Bucharest

Bucharest, December 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: A memorial march will be held in central Bucharest on December 21, 2025, to honour the victims of the 1989 Romanian Revolution, a historic uprising that led to the collapse of the communist regime and marked a decisive turning point in the country’s modern history.

Organized as part of a broader series of commemorative activities, the march is expected to bring together citizens, civic organizations, and public officials to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the protests and uprisings that culminated in the end of authoritarian rule.

The march forms part of nationwide observances scheduled from December 20 to 22, 2025, marking the 36th anniversary of the December 1989 events. During this period, religious services, civic ceremonies, and memorial gatherings will be held in Bucharest and other cities at monuments, cemeteries, and public squares dedicated to the heroes of the Revolution.

The December 1989 uprising was characterized by widespread demonstrations against the former communist leadership and ultimately led to the execution of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife. The events paved the way for Romania’s transition toward democracy, political pluralism, and fundamental freedoms.

Organizers have emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of those who fought and died for freedom and human dignity, highlighting the Revolution’s lasting significance for Romanian society and future generations.

National and local authorities are continuing to coordinate detailed schedules of commemorative services, ensuring opportunities for participation by residents, civil society representatives, and visiting dignitaries during the anniversary events.
