Astana, January 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Government of Kazakhstan has approved the Waste Management Concept for the period 2026–2030, according to media reports. The document outlines key approaches for the country’s transition to an environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient economic model.
The development of the Concept addresses systemic challenges in Kazakhstan’s waste management sector, including low recycling rates, insufficient infrastructure, heavy reliance on landfills, rising volumes of industrial and hazardous waste, and weak coordination between authorities and regional administrations.
Implementation of the Concept aims to promote the development of processing infrastructure, reduce the burden on landfills, integrate secondary resources into the economy, digitize waste management processes, and increase private sector participation.
The document has been formulated in alignment with Kazakhstan’s strategic frameworks, including the Kazakhstan-2050 Strategy, the Green Economy Transition Concept, the 2029 National Development Plan, and the 2060 Carbon Neutrality Strategy. It also reflects the country’s international commitments to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
