Davos, January 21, 2026 – The Europe Today: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday accused the United States of seeking to weaken Europe and urged European nations not to accept a global order governed by the “law of the strongest,” speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, media reports said.
Macron alleged that Washington was attempting to exert pressure on Europe through threats by US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on countries supporting Greenland and Denmark. He warned that such actions risk undermining multilateral cooperation and international rules.
In his address, the French leader cautioned against passively entering a world dominated by brute force. “Europe must defend multilateralism, which serves our interests and the interests of all those who refuse to submit to brute force,” Macron said.
He called on European countries to act collectively, stressing the importance of joint decision-making and sustained dialogue. As examples, Macron cited the European mission to Greenland in response to US threats, as well as ongoing discussions within the framework of the Group of Seven (G7).
“Europe has very powerful tools, and we must use them when we are not respected and when the rules of the game are not observed,” he added, referring to measures under consideration by the European Union to counter potential US tariffs.
Macron’s remarks came amid escalating tensions following Trump’s recent statements on Greenland. The US president previously shared screenshots of correspondence with Macron, in which the French leader said he did not “understand” Trump’s approach to the Greenland issue.
A day earlier, Trump advised European leaders to focus on the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict rather than Greenland. On January 17, he announced that Washington would impose tariffs from February 1 on several countries opposing his stance on Greenland.
