President Trump Praises PM Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir at Board of Peace Session

Washington, February 20, 2026 – The Europe Today: Donald Trump on Thursday praised Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, for what he described as their outstanding leadership, during his address at the inaugural session of the Board of Peace in Washington.

Speaking at the event, President Trump said he held Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in high regard. “I like Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif a lot,” he remarked, noting that he developed ties with the Pakistani premier during a period of heightened tensions between Pakistan and India.

Referring to the conflict between the two South Asian neighbors, Trump said the United States had played a constructive role in helping to de-escalate the situation. “We played our role to stop war between Pakistan and India,” he stated.

The U.S. president said trade leverage was used as a diplomatic tool to encourage restraint. “I told Modi that if the war is not stopped, I will impose heavy tariffs on India,” he recalled, adding that decisive measures contributed to ending hostilities.

Trump also commended Pakistan’s army chief, describing Field Marshal Asim Munir as “a great personality and a great general.” He acknowledged the intensity of the conflict, noting that eleven aircraft were reportedly shot down during the confrontation.

The remarks were delivered as part of broader discussions at the Board of Peace, where global leaders gathered to explore mechanisms for conflict resolution and long-term stability in regions affected by tensions and war.
