Malaysia Receives First Malaysian-Owned Crude Shipment from Iraq as Ocean Thunder Docks

Ocean Thunder

Kuala Lumpur, April 18, 2026 – The Europe Today: The first of seven Malaysian-owned vessels, Ocean Thunder, has docked in Malaysia carrying one million barrels of crude oil sourced from Basrah, Iraq, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s energy supply chain.

In a statement shared on social media, Petronas said the shipment forms part of its extensive global supply network and ongoing efforts to ensure stable and reliable fuel availability for the nation.

The company highlighted that the vessel’s journey originated from the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring Malaysia’s continued reliance on long-haul energy logistics to secure crude supplies across international waters.

According to Petronas, the one million barrels of crude oil transported by Ocean Thunder is equivalent to approximately 159 million litres. The cargo is expected to undergo a refining process of around six days upon arrival.

Following refining, the crude is projected to yield between 62 and 64 million litres of diesel, 45 to 48 million litres of petrol, 22 to 24 million litres of jet fuel, five to six million litres of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and an additional 18 to 25 million litres of other refined petroleum products.

Petronas noted that these figures are estimates and may vary depending on the type of crude oil and refinery configuration, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining efficiency and flexibility in meeting national energy demands.
