Moscow, May 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful testing of the latest Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, highlighting continued efforts to develop advanced strategic weapons systems as part of strengthening Russia’s defence and nuclear capabilities.

According to a report by the Russian News Agency TASS, Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, Sergey Karakayev, confirmed that Russia has successfully tested the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile system and reported its progress to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces.

The missile system, identified as the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, is described as one of the most advanced strategic weapons developed by Russia, designed to enhance long-range strike capability and strategic deterrence.

President Putin stated that the Sarmat will be placed on combat duty by the end of the year, underscoring its strategic importance in Russia’s defence planning.

“The Sarmat will indeed be deployed on combat duty by the end of this year,” Putin said, emphasizing that the missile system represents a significant advancement in Russia’s military capabilities.

He further noted that the missile is capable of operating not only on a traditional ballistic trajectory but also on a suborbital path, which significantly extends its operational range and enhances its ability to overcome missile defence systems.

Putin described the system as “the most powerful” of its kind globally, claiming that its warhead yield is substantially greater than that of comparable Western systems.

Russian defence officials said the development reflects ongoing modernization of strategic forces and reinforces Russia’s position in maintaining nuclear deterrence and global military balance.
