Turkmenistan and Austria Reaffirm Commitment to Expanding Bilateral Cooperation at Joint Commission Meeting

Ashgabat, June 14, 2026 — The Europe Today: The 13th meeting of the Joint Turkmen-Austrian Commission was held on June 12, 2026, at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan, bringing together government officials and business representatives from both countries to review ongoing cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership.

The Austrian delegation was led by Elisabeth Weissenböck, Director of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism. Representatives of Turkmenistan’s government institutions and business community also participated in the discussions.

The meeting focused on the practical implementation of agreements reached during previous sessions of the Commission, including proposals aimed at strengthening bilateral economic and trade relations. Participants also exchanged views on identifying new areas of cooperation to support the long-term development of ties between Turkmenistan and Austria.

The two sides positively assessed the progress achieved in implementing earlier agreements and discussed opportunities to further expand cooperation across a wide range of sectors. Priority areas included the introduction of innovative technologies in industry, energy development, environmental protection and waste management, construction, transport infrastructure, services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and agricultural processing.

Particular attention was given to emerging high-tech sectors such as the green economy, digitalization, and artificial intelligence, which were identified as highly promising fields for future collaboration. The discussions also highlighted growing mutual interest in urban infrastructure development, water treatment technologies, and cooperation within the banking sector.

Beyond economic relations, participants emphasized the importance of strengthening cultural and educational exchanges. The meeting noted that hosting Viennese balls and performances by the Turkmen-Austrian Symphony Orchestra “Galkynysh” in Ashgabat has become a valued tradition that contributes to deeper people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The development of partnerships between research institutions and educational centers was also identified as a priority area for future cooperation, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing scientific, academic, and cultural exchanges.

During the session, Turkmenistan and Austria reaffirmed their mutual commitment to broadening bilateral cooperation across all sectors and strengthening their long-standing partnership.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a protocol outlining the agreed areas of cooperation and future activities under the framework of the Joint Turkmen-Austrian Commission.

In addition to the plenary session, representatives of ministries, government agencies, and business communities from both countries held a series of bilateral meetings aimed at promoting practical cooperation and exploring new investment and trade opportunities.

The latest session of the Joint Turkmen-Austrian Commission underscored the growing importance of bilateral relations and highlighted the shared interest of both nations in expanding economic, technological, cultural, and educational cooperation in the years ahead.
