Dushanbe, August 25, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Chairman of the Majlisi milli Majlisi Oli and Mayor of Dushanbe Rustam Emomali on August 24 inaugurated the new National Theatre in the capital, marking a major milestone in the country’s cultural development.
The inauguration of the grand cultural facility was described as a significant event for the people of Tajikistan. Built on the initiative of President Emomali Rahmon, the National Theatre has been presented as a major cultural project dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s state independence.
Following the inauguration ceremony, President Rahmon and Mayor Rustam Emomali signed the distinguished guests’ book and conveyed their good wishes.
Located in a central area of Dushanbe near the National Museum and State Flag Park, the National Theatre features a combination of modern architectural design and traditional Tajik artistic elements. Its construction and decoration incorporate national motifs, patterns and artistic details reflecting the country’s historical and cultural heritage.
The construction of the theatre began on March 17, 2015, when President Rahmon laid the foundation stone. After 11 years of construction, the completed complex has emerged as one of the country’s largest cultural institutions.
The seven-storey building comprises two underground and five above-ground floors and stands 35 metres high. The theatre occupies approximately three hectares of land and incorporates modern engineering systems, equipment and facilities.
The National Theatre has three principal halls. Its main auditorium can accommodate 2,500 spectators and is equipped with a large stage and dedicated orchestra facilities suitable for theatrical performances, opera, ballet, symphony concerts and other major cultural events.
The second hall has a capacity of 1,000 people, while the conference hall can accommodate 1,115 participants. The facilities allow the complex to host several cultural, educational, political and international events.
The building also includes rehearsal rooms, workshops for finishing, tailoring and shoemaking, lighting facilities, audio and video recording studios, administrative offices, a theatre museum, exhibition spaces, guest reception halls and other supporting facilities.
The complex is equipped with 17 passenger and freight elevators and six escalators. It also includes a hotel with 136 accommodation places for guests, while the two underground floors provide parking for 250 vehicles along with technical and auxiliary facilities.
Modern heating, air-conditioning and other engineering systems have also been installed throughout the building.
The design of the theatre seeks to combine contemporary technologies with elements of Tajik national culture. Decorative patterns and artistic features draw inspiration from the country’s ancient history and civilization, highlighting the connection between Tajikistan’s cultural heritage and its contemporary development.
The new theatre is expected to provide improved working conditions for artists and theatre professionals while creating opportunities for the development of new productions, the promotion of young talent and the staging of works based on Tajik history, literature and cultural traditions.
The opening also reflects the Tajik government’s broader focus on supporting the development of culture and the arts and modernizing cultural institutions. During the years of independence, several new theatres have been established, while existing cultural facilities have undergone renovation and modernization.
The National Theatre is expected to serve as a major venue for theatrical productions, opera, ballet, symphony concerts, festivals, international cultural programmes and other major artistic events.
The facility is also intended to contribute to the international promotion of Tajikistan’s cultural heritage and provide a platform for artists to showcase the country’s rich history, literature, music and performing arts.
The inauguration of the National Theatre ahead of Tajikistan’s 35th anniversary of state independence marks the completion of an 11-year construction project and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s theatrical and cultural life.
The new landmark is expected to play an important role in preserving national cultural values, fostering artistic talent, promoting cultural education and presenting Tajikistan’s artistic heritage to audiences at home and abroad.
