Jakarta, September 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin received Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergei Gennadievich Tolchenov in Jakarta on Wednesday to discuss measures to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting focused on Indonesia-Russia bilateral relations and concrete steps to further enhance cooperation in the defense sector.
Following the meeting, Sjafrie shared photographs of the encounter on his official Instagram account. In an accompanying statement, he said the discussions covered various forms of military cooperation, including personnel exchanges, joint military exercises, special forces training and military medicine.
The minister did not disclose specific dates or details regarding the implementation of the proposed joint activities.
Sjafrie expressed optimism that defense cooperation between Indonesia and Russia would continue to develop positively, citing the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries.
“Indonesia views Russia as an important partner in developing defense cooperation based on mutual respect, trust, shared interests, and respect for each country’s sovereignty,” Sjafrie said.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Indonesia and Russia to strengthen bilateral relations and expand practical cooperation in the defense and military sectors.
