Vienna, September 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: A high-level Moroccan delegation is participating in the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), being held in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026.
The Moroccan delegation is headed by Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the international organisations in Vienna. It includes Hamid Marah, Director General of the National Centre for Energy, Nuclear Science and Technology (CNESTEN), and Saïd Mouline, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), along with senior officials from relevant ministries and technical institutions.
Morocco’s participation comes at the conclusion of its 2024–2026 term on the IAEA Board of Governors, during which it also served as Vice-President of the Board. The country has highlighted dialogue, multilateralism and international cooperation during its engagement with the agency.
The 70th General Conference brings together representatives of IAEA member states to discuss the agency’s priorities and activities, including technical cooperation, the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, nuclear safety and security, and safeguards. The conference is being attended by around 4,000 participants.
A key development expected during the conference is the election of Morocco, represented by CNESTEN, to chair the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) for the 2026–2027 term. The proposed chairmanship would further support regional cooperation, capacity building, knowledge-sharing and South-South cooperation in nuclear science and technology.
The IAEA General Conference serves as the agency’s principal policymaking body, providing a forum for member states to consider major priorities and adopt decisions concerning nuclear technology, safety, security, safeguards and technical cooperation.
