Havana, September 19, 2026 – The Europe Today: Cuba’s national electricity grid suffered a complete collapse on Friday, leaving the entire island without power, the country’s Ministry of Energy and Mines said.
The blackout affected Cuba’s population of approximately 9.4 million people, as the country continues to face serious challenges in maintaining its electricity generation system.
Cuba’s ageing power infrastructure has been placed under increasing pressure by fuel shortages and deteriorating generating facilities. The problems have contributed to frequent and prolonged power outages across the country.
Even when the national grid remains operational, recurring blackouts have affected millions of Cubans, disrupting daily life and placing additional strain on essential services.
Authorities have yet to provide details on the precise cause of Friday’s nationwide grid failure or indicate when electricity supplies will be fully restored.
