Tehran, October 20, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to implementing economic and investment agreements with Iran despite the challenging circumstances facing the two countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference following talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran, Lavrov said Russia had no intention of abandoning its existing economic commitments to Iran.
“Despite the challenging situation, which has repeatedly been mentioned, Russia has no intention to abandon the implementation of economic and investment agreements with Iran,” Lavrov stated.
Highlighting ongoing cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, the Russian foreign minister said Russian specialists were gradually returning to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, reflecting the continuation of bilateral engagement in this strategic area.
Lavrov also pointed to promising opportunities for cooperation in hydrocarbon extraction and transportation, underscoring the potential to expand energy ties between Moscow and Tehran.
Regarding transport infrastructure, he said the Russian contractor was continuing engineering surveys along the planned route of the Rasht-Astara railway project in Iran.
Construction work is expected to begin once the Iranian side completes the necessary documentation, Lavrov added.
The railway project is an important component of efforts to strengthen transport connectivity between Russia and Iran, with potential implications for regional trade and logistics.
Lavrov’s remarks reaffirmed Moscow’s stated intention to maintain economic cooperation with Tehran, particularly in energy, investment and infrastructure development, despite the difficult prevailing circumstances.
