Geneva, March 15, 2024, The Europe Today: Eldiyor Toshmatov, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations, officially presented his credentials to Tatyana Valovaya, the Director General of the UN Office in Switzerland, as reported by Uzbek media sources.
During the ceremonial exchange, the distinguished diplomats engaged in a fruitful dialogue, shedding light on the current state and future prospects of Uzbekistan’s multifaceted relationship with the United Nations. Toshmatov elucidated the sweeping reforms underway across Uzbek society, highlighting the overarching vision encapsulated in the “Uzbekistan-2030” strategy, spearheaded by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Expressing her appreciation, Director General Valovaya commended Uzbekistan’s leadership for its proactive initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing the well-being of its populace. She specifically lauded the country’s efforts in hosting the head of the UN branch in Geneva in December 2022 and organizing a poignant photo exhibition in Tashkent addressing gender issues under the theme “17 Faces of the Movement.”
Uzbekistan’s steadfast commitment to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular emphasis on promoting gender equality and women’s active participation in societal affairs, was underscored during the dialogue.
Director General Valovaya also lauded Uzbekistan’s enhanced cooperation with the UN, noting the country’s transparent engagement with specialized UN bodies in Geneva, particularly in the realm of human rights.
Geneva, renowned as a hub for international diplomacy, hosts over 40 prominent international organizations dedicated to a diverse array of global issues spanning peacebuilding, human rights, sustainable development, disarmament, and environmental conservation. Notable entities based in Geneva include the World Health Organization, the International Labor Organization, the World Trade Organization, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, among others.
Eldiyor Tashmatov, a seasoned diplomat and the newly appointed Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN and other international organizations, assumed his responsibilities in Geneva earlier this month. With a wealth of academic credentials, including degrees from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Uzbekistan, and Webster University in Tashkent, Tashmatov brings a wealth of expertise and insight to his new role at the forefront of Uzbekistan’s diplomatic endeavors.
