New York, September 21, 2024 – The Europe Today: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining ties with the Taliban, while expressing concerns over the growing terrorist threat from Afghanistan.
In an interview with a US broadcaster, Munir Akram emphasized that the Afghan people should not suffer for the mistakes of their government, stressing the importance of continued diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. He highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding relationship with its neighbor and reaffirmed the country’s support for dialogue and policy to transform the situation.
Akram also raised alarms at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about the rising threat posed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group that Pakistan refers to as Fitna al-Khawarij. He warned that the TTP is rapidly expanding its influence in collaboration with the Afghan interim government, which supports them with advanced weaponry. Akram expressed concerns over the TTP’s growing alliances with other insurgent factions, including secessionist groups like the Majeed Brigade and Al-Qaeda, which could elevate the group’s role in regional and global terrorism.
The ambassador further criticized the Afghan interim government for its human rights abuses, particularly against women and girls, condemning its failure to uphold promises on gender equality. He noted that these regressive policies contradict Islamic values and hinder Afghanistan’s international engagement potential.
A recent UN report supported Pakistan’s claims, revealing that the TTP operates with an estimated force of 6,000 to 6,500 fighters in Afghanistan, with increasing backing from the Taliban. Despite international pressure, the Afghan government has failed to curb the group’s activities, complicating the regional security landscape.
Pakistan has reiterated its readiness to work with international and regional bodies to counter this growing menace, while continuing its national crackdown on Fitna al-Khawarij.
