Beijing, November 27, 2024 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa in Beijing on Tuesday, reaffirming China’s commitment to assisting Pacific Island countries, including Samoa, in addressing climate change and fostering sustainable development.
President Xi emphasized China’s readiness to prioritize climate resilience in its cooperation with Pacific Island nations. He highlighted China’s dedication to the full implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, underscoring principles of fairness, justice, and the shared interests of the Global South.
Xi praised the longstanding friendship between China and Samoa, which dates back nearly five decades since the establishment of diplomatic ties. He commended the relationship as one rooted in mutual respect, equal treatment, and win-win cooperation.
“China supports Samoa in safeguarding its sovereignty and independence, and in pursuing a development path that aligns with its national conditions,” Xi stated. He also pledged continued assistance in Samoa’s economic and social development, emphasizing collaboration in economy, trade, investment, agriculture, and fisheries to achieve mutual growth.
Xi reassured that China’s aid to Pacific Island countries is free of political conditions and not aimed at geopolitical competition. “China’s policy toward Pacific Island countries is open and inclusive, targeting shared development rather than competition or spheres of influence,” he affirmed.
Prime Minister Mata’afa expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support and recognized China as an important strategic partner for Samoa. She highlighted the significance of learning from China’s achievements in modernization, particularly in poverty reduction and green development.
Samoa, Mata’afa said, firmly adheres to the one-China principle and supports President Xi’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative.
Looking ahead to the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025, Mata’afa expressed optimism about advancing bilateral relations and strengthening collaboration in key areas of mutual interest.
This meeting underscores the shared commitment of China and Samoa to fostering sustainable development, addressing global challenges, and reinforcing their strategic partnership.
