Wang Yi Calls for Strengthened China-Japan Cooperation to Promote Regional and Global Stability

Beijing, December 4, 2024 – The Europe Today: Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, called on China and Japan to work together to promote stable and enduring bilateral relations while contributing to regional and international peace and stability. Wang made these remarks in a video speech at the 20th Beijing-Tokyo Forum.

Highlighting the more than 2,000 years of exchange history and over 50 years of normalized diplomatic relations between the two nations, Wang emphasized the importance of a China-Japan relationship aligned with the correct development trajectory. Such a partnership, he stated, would not only benefit both countries but also enhance global peace and development.

Wang stressed adherence to the consensus reached by the leaders of both nations, urging both sides to remain committed to their original aspirations, seek common ground, and coordinate actions to foster cooperation.

China regards Japan as a key partner and hopes Japan will view China’s development objectively and rationally. He underscored the importance of the four political documents that form the foundation of bilateral ties, cautioning against actions that undermine these agreements.

Wang also called for mutual economic benefit through an open strategy, urging both nations to safeguard the global free trade system and the stability of industrial and supply chains. Additionally, he highlighted the necessity for joint efforts to counter rising unilateralism and protectionism, advocating for Asian unity to prevent external forces from fostering confrontation.

The Beijing-Tokyo Forum, established in 2005, serves as a high-level platform for dialogue and cooperation. Wang expressed hope that the forum would continue to encourage candid exchanges, build consensus, and make meaningful contributions to China-Japan relations in the new era.
