Baku, January 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has asserted that the “Soros era” in America has come to an end, criticizing the previous governance approach of the Biden administration as being influenced by what he termed the “Soros method of governance.” The remarks were made during an interview with local television channels on Sunday, as reported by state media.
“These supporters of Soros are actually losing their positions. The Armenian leadership should take this into account,” President Aliyev stated. He further urged Armenia to reconsider its geopolitical stance and warned against obstructing regional cooperation in the South Caucasus.
Referring to Armenia’s foreign alliances, Aliyev remarked, “Let them take into account that their close ally in the Middle East, the Assad dictatorship, has already been consigned to the dustbin of history and this will continue. They should take the right step.”
The Azerbaijani leader reaffirmed his country’s commitment to peace and cooperation in the region, dismissing claims that Azerbaijan posed a threat to Armenia. “We, as Azerbaijan, are not a source of danger for them. We want peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus,” he said.
Aliyev also emphasized the strategic importance of the Zangezur Corridor, a proposed transportation route connecting Azerbaijan and Türkiye through Armenia. He called on Yerevan to avoid obstructing its realization. “They should not act as a geographical barrier between Türkiye and Azerbaijan. The Zangezur Corridor must and will be opened. The sooner they understand this, the better it is,” he noted.
The Zangezur Corridor has been a contentious issue between Azerbaijan and Armenia, with its establishment seen as a key component of regional connectivity and economic integration. Aliyev’s comments come amid ongoing tensions and negotiations following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
