Trump Signs Executive Order Restricting Federal Support for Gender-Affirming Care

Washington, D.C., , January 29, 2025 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order barring federal support for gender-affirming medical care for individuals under the age of 19, the White House announced on Tuesday.

“It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another,” Trump stated, describing such treatments as “destructive and life-altering.”

The directive instructs federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, to terminate coverage for gender-affirming care under Medicaid, TRICARE, and other federal insurance programs. Additionally, the order calls on the Department of Justice to pursue litigation and draft legislation opposing medical practices related to gender transitions for minors.

Trump also expressed his intent to work with Congress to develop legislation allowing children and parents to sue doctors who have performed gender-related surgeries.

This move follows another executive order signed by Trump last Monday, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” The order mandates that the federal government recognize only two biological sexes—male and female—as determined at conception.

Speaking at the Davos forum last week, Trump reiterated his stance, stating that gender-related surgeries “will occur very rarely” under his administration.

The order has sparked strong reactions from both supporters and critics, with proponents arguing it protects children from irreversible procedures, while opponents contend it restricts access to necessary medical care and undermines transgender rights.
