Canada Retaliates Against US Tariffs with Countermeasures on Key Goods

Ottawa, February 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: Canada has responded to former US President Donald Trump’s steep tariffs on imported goods with retaliatory measures, imposing counter-tariffs on a wide range of American products. The announcement came from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Saturday night.

Trudeau declared that Canada would enforce a 25% tariff on C$155 billion (£85.9 billion) worth of US goods in direct response to Trump’s identical 25% tariff on Canadian imports. Additionally, energy imports from Canada, including oil, natural gas, and electricity, will face a 10% tax.

The first round of duties, affecting C$30 billion (£16.6 billion) worth of American alcohol and fruit, will be implemented on Tuesday, coinciding with the start of US tariffs. The remaining C$125 billion (£69.3 billion) in trade restrictions will be enforced within 21 days.

Addressing American consumers, Trudeau warned that these tariffs would have “real consequences,” leading to increased prices for groceries and essential goods. He also criticized Washington’s approach, arguing that such actions were divisive rather than unifying.

Expressing Canada’s deep disappointment, Trudeau recalled the country’s history of solidarity with the US, mentioning Canada’s role in Afghanistan, its assistance during California’s wildfires, and support following Hurricane Katrina. He urged Canadians to prioritize domestic products over American alternatives in response to the US tariffs.
