Baku, March 17, 2025 – The Europe Today: Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, met with Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, on Monday during the latter’s official visit to Azerbaijan.
Following a one-on-one meeting, Speaker Matviyenko presented the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation to Speaker Gafarova in recognition of her contributions to strengthening bilateral ties.
During an expanded meeting with the participation of delegations, both sides engaged in discussions on enhancing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia across political, economic, and humanitarian sectors. Speaker Gafarova underscored the pivotal role of interparliamentary relations in fostering closer ties and emphasized the contributions of parliamentarians in this regard. The two sides also acknowledged the significance of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Federal Assembly of Russia in promoting dialogue and collaboration.
Speaker Matviyenko highlighted the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev in Russia, recognizing his exceptional contributions to Azerbaijan and its people. She also praised Azerbaijan’s increasing influence on the global stage under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. In particular, she lauded Azerbaijan’s successful organization of COP29, despite various challenges, and extended her congratulations. Matviyenko emphasized the importance of the Parliamentary Meeting held as part of COP29, which played a vital role in international climate discussions.
The meeting also served as a platform for an exchange of views on other key issues of mutual interest, reinforcing the commitment of both nations to furthering their strategic partnership through parliamentary diplomacy.
