New York, July 25, 2026 – The Europe Today: The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted the resolution entitled “Year of International Law, 2028,” initiated by Turkmenistan during the 106th plenary meeting of its 80th session, marking a significant step toward strengthening the global commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation.
The resolution was adopted by consensus on July 24 and received the support of 78 co-sponsoring Member States, reflecting broad international endorsement of the initiative.
Presenting the draft resolution, the Turkmen delegation underscored that, at a time of profound global transformations, reinforcing respect for international law is essential for preserving international peace and security, achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhancing effective multilateral cooperation.
The delegation emphasized that adherence to international legal principles remains a cornerstone for addressing contemporary global challenges and fostering dialogue, stability, and sustainable development.
The adoption of the resolution represents another acknowledgment by the international community of Turkmenistan’s continued efforts to promote the rule of international law, strengthen the culture of peace and trust, and advance constructive multilateral engagement within the framework of the United Nations.
The initiative further highlights the growing international consensus on the importance of upholding international legal norms as a foundation for global peace, security, and cooperative development.
