Hanoi, August 31, 2026 – The Europe Today: Việtnam is seeking to elevate tourism into a key pillar of the national economy under a new Politburo resolution, with ambitious long-term targets aimed at increasing the sector’s contribution to economic growth, strengthening competitiveness and attracting more international visitors.
Under the new development direction, tourism is expected to generate stronger spillover effects across other sectors of the economy, contributing to economic growth, innovation and broader development.
By 2045, Việtnam aims for tourism to contribute between 14 and 15 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), while positioning the country among the world’s 30 most competitive tourism economies. The country also targets 70 million international visitors by that time.
The resolution reflects a strategic shift towards treating tourism not only as a service industry but also as an important driver of economic development. Greater linkages between tourism and other sectors are expected to help create additional economic value and promote innovation.
The policy direction comes as Việtnam seeks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive regional and global tourism market. Authorities are focusing on improving the quality and competitiveness of tourism products while creating stronger connections between destinations, businesses and local communities.
The country is also pursuing sustainable tourism development, with growing emphasis on cultural and community-based experiences, environmental protection and the effective use of local resources.
The government’s broader tourism strategy has set an interim target of welcoming 35 million international arrivals and 160 million domestic travellers by 2030, while increasing tourism’s direct contribution to GDP to 13–14 percent.
The latest policy direction is therefore expected to provide further momentum for investment, infrastructure development, tourism promotion and the diversification of tourism products, supporting Việt Nam’s ambition to establish tourism as a major contributor to national prosperity.
