Moscow, September 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: Authorities in Moscow and the surrounding Moscow region have unveiled plans for a major expansion of the capital’s metro network, with 65 new stations expected to be opened over the next decade to improve connectivity between Moscow and its outer suburbs.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday that approximately 30 new metro stations are planned to open over the next five years, followed by another 35 stations by 2035. Twelve of the stations in the second phase will be constructed within the Moscow region.
Sobyanin said the expansion would improve the quality of life for around 2 million Moscow residents and 3.7 million residents of the Moscow region. He noted that the wider Moscow metropolitan area has a population of approximately 20 million.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov outlined the scale of the planned expansion, which will extend metro connectivity to the suburban districts of Krasnogorsk, Khimki, Mytishchi, Balashikha, Odintsovo and Leninsky.
According to Vorobyov, the new stations are expected to serve approximately 600,000 commuters each day and could reduce travel times to central Moscow by up to one hour.
Construction of the new metro lines in the Moscow region is expected to begin after 2028, the governor said.
The planned expansion represents the latest phase in the rapid development of Moscow’s metro system under Sobyanin, who has served as mayor for nearly 16 years.
