Rabat, September 28, 2026 — The Europe Today: Morocco has ranked eighth among the world’s fastest-improving economies in travel and tourism development, according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI).
Morocco’s TTDI score increased by 5.5 percent between 2024 and 2026, placing the country among the 10 economies that recorded the strongest improvements during the period. Its score reached 3.84 out of seven, while its overall position rose by seven places to 70th among 110 economies assessed in the 2026 index.
The improvement was significantly higher than the 2.1 percent global average recorded during the same period. The WEF reported that 92 percent of the economies covered by the index improved their scores between 2024 and 2026.
Morocco’s performance placed it eighth among the fastest-improving economies, following Albania, Vietnam, Laos, Qatar, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Nepal and Sri Lanka completed the group of 10 fastest improvers.
The WEF’s TTDI evaluates the conditions and policies that enable sustainable and resilient development of the travel and tourism sector. Its assessment covers 17 areas, including tourism infrastructure and services, air transport connectivity, cultural and natural resources, ICT readiness, price competitiveness, safety and security, and tourism demand sustainability.
The index does not measure countries solely by tourist arrivals, tourism revenues or visitor spending. Instead, it assesses the broader environment that supports the sustainable development of travel and tourism.
The WEF noted that the Asia-Pacific and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions recorded some of the strongest improvements between 2024 and 2026. Average scores increased by 3.6 percent in Asia-Pacific and 2.5 percent in MENA, with progress in areas including cultural resources, tourism services and infrastructure, and tourism demand sustainability.
Globally, Japan ranked first in the 2026 TTDI, followed by the United States and Spain, while six European economies featured among the overall top 10. The WEF also reported that international tourist arrivals reached a record 1.5 billion in 2025, highlighting the continued expansion of the global travel and tourism sector.
Morocco’s rise in the 2026 index reflects the country’s improved position across the broader conditions underpinning travel and tourism development and places it among the economies showing the most notable progress in the sector over the two-year period.
