Lavrov Says Global Challenges Mobilise Russian Diplomats for Greater Responsibilities

Moscow, October 21, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the growing complexity of international affairs presents an opportunity for Russian diplomats to strengthen their capabilities and respond to increasingly demanding foreign policy challenges.

Speaking to university graduates newly recruited into Russia’s diplomatic service, Lavrov said they were joining the Foreign Ministry at a particularly challenging time, requiring commitment, adaptability and the practical application of their academic knowledge.

Referring to the Chinese saying, “God forbid you to live in interesting times,” Lavrov said the sentiment did not reflect the approach of Russian diplomats, arguing that challenges served as a source of motivation and helped mobilise them to address difficult tasks.

“Challenges are a boon to us, and we are always mobilised by the tasks that are becoming increasingly difficult,” he said.

Lavrov noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry and the country’s foreign policy, as determined by the Russian president, faced complex responsibilities amid rapidly evolving international developments.

He told the new recruits that they would need to engage immediately with multifaceted and fast-moving international processes, without an extended adjustment period.

The foreign minister expressed confidence in the abilities of the newly appointed diplomats, describing their recruitment as an indication of their determination, talent and ambition.

He also highlighted the importance of language proficiency and academic knowledge, stressing that the graduates must now apply their education and skills in practical diplomatic work.

Lavrov assured the new diplomats that they would receive support from experienced colleagues and the Council of Young Diplomats as they began their careers in the foreign service.

He emphasised the importance of professional development and guidance from senior diplomats in helping the next generation navigate increasingly complex international affairs.
