Xiamen, June 09, 2024, The Europe Today: China has made significant strides in the development of its marine economy and has enhanced cooperation and partnerships in international maritime governance, according to Sun Shuxian, Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Head of the State Oceanic Administration. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Xiamen to mark World Oceans Day.
Sun Shuxian highlighted China’s continuous efforts to protect and develop marine resources. Official data revealed that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China’s marine economy contributed approximately 8 percent to the nation’s GDP. In 2023, the total economic output of China’s marine industry reached 9.9 trillion yuan (about 1.39 trillion U.S. dollars), underscoring its crucial role in stabilizing economic growth.
In the first quarter of this year, container throughput for foreign trade at Chinese ports rose by 11 percent year-on-year, driven by a rebound in external demand and a relatively low base from the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
To foster a global marine community with a shared future, China has signed cooperation agreements with over 50 countries and international organizations. Sun emphasized that China is committed to advancing the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with coastal nations, and actively participating in the creation and implementation of international maritime governance mechanisms and rules.
Looking ahead, China’s focus will be on promoting sustainable marine economic development and enhancing its role in global maritime governance, further solidifying its position as a key player in the international maritime community.
