Islamabad, July 06, 2024, The Europe Today: A Brazilian paraglider tragically plummeted to his death in northern Pakistan, a local official confirmed on Friday. Chaddad Raineri Rodrigo, 55, is the fourth foreign adventurer to die in the area since last month.
Northern Pakistan, known for its majestic peaks including K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, attracts tourists worldwide with its stunning landscapes. Rodrigo was part of a seven-member team trekking to the K2 base camp. While the rest of the team continued their trek, Rodrigo opted to paraglide.
“His parachute burst shortly after he started paragliding, causing him to fall,” local police spokesman Muhammad Nazir told AFP over the phone from Shigar, where the accident occurred.
The team included two individuals from France, two from the United States, and one each from Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Nazir stated that Rodrigo’s body has been recovered and will be repatriated to Brazil following consultations with his family.
This incident follows the deaths of three Japanese climbers in two separate accidents earlier this summer climbing season.
In recent years, Pakistan has ramped up its efforts to promote tourism in the region, aiming to bolster the local economy. According to government figures, more than 8,900 foreigners visited the remote Gilgit-Baltistan region, home to many of the country’s highest peaks, last year.
