Ulaanbaatar, September 30, 2024 — The Europe Today: Vietnam and Mongolia have officially established a comprehensive partnership, as announced in a joint statement during the state visit of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President Tô Lâm from September 30 to October 1.
The joint statement highlights that during his visit, President Lâm engaged in talks with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, Chairman of the Parliament Dashzegve Amarbayasgalan, and Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene.
Both nations’ leaders expressed their appreciation for the longstanding friendship between Vietnam and Mongolia, which has been significantly strengthened over the past 70 years. They discussed future directions for developing bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Mongolian leaders affirmed their view of Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia, expressing a desire to foster mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors. In response, Vietnam emphasized its commitment to enhancing relations with Mongolia, acknowledging the country’s peace-loving and independent foreign policy, including its “third neighbor” policy.
Both leaders agreed that strengthening Vietnam-Mongolia relations serves the common interests of their peoples and significantly contributes to regional and global peace, stability, and development. They committed to elevating their bilateral ties to a comprehensive partnership and pledged to continue fostering cooperation.
Key areas of collaboration include:
- Political Cooperation: Increasing mutual visits, exchanges, and meetings at all levels between their parties, states, governments, and parliaments; enhancing ties between legislative bodies; and ensuring the effectiveness of the political consultation mechanism at the deputy foreign minister level.
- Defense and Security: Expanding cooperation in national defense, security, and law enforcement.
- Economic Partnerships: Strengthening economic, trade, and investment relations.
- Collaborative Projects: Promoting result-oriented collaboration in agriculture, science, transportation, culture, sports, tourism, education, labor, environment, and social protection.
The two countries also aim to reinforce cooperation in regional and international affairs, particularly within the frameworks of international and regional organizations. They intend to address non-traditional security threats such as climate change, terrorism, and transnational crimes. Furthermore, the leaders underscored the importance of maintaining peace, security, and stability in the East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea), advocating for peaceful resolutions to disputes based on the United Nations Charter and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
During the visit, several cooperation documents were signed, signaling a commitment to deepening ties. The leaders concurred that President Lâm’s state visit to Mongolia significantly paves the way for enhanced friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
