Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Arrives in South Korea

Seoul, November 25, 2024 – The Europe Today: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Seoul on Sunday, November 24, for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Malaysia and South Korea. The visit comes as both nations prepare to mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

The Prime Minister’s aircraft landed at Seoul Air Base at 9:55 p.m. local time (8:55 p.m. Malaysian time). He was greeted by South Korea’s Public Affairs Ministry spokesman and Deputy Minister Lee Jaewoong, Korean Ambassador to Malaysia Yeo Seung Bae, and Malaysian Ambassador to South Korea Datuk Mohd Zamruni Khalid.

Accompanying Anwar were key cabinet members, including Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, and National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, alongside senior government officials.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, includes a bilateral meeting scheduled for Monday, November 25, at the Yongsan Presidential Office. According to Malaysian Ambassador Mohd Zamruni, the leaders will review the progress of bilateral relations and discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern. The discussions will also address Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and South Korea’s APEC Chairmanship in 2025.

As part of the visit, Anwar and Yoon will witness the exchange of three key memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on:

  • Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education
  • Cooperation in the Field of Carbon Capture and Storage
  • Cooperation in Cooperative Approaches Under Article 6, Paragraph 2 of the Paris Agreement

A significant highlight of the trip will be the Malaysia-Republic of Korea Business Forum, where Anwar will engage directly with leading South Korean conglomerates. The forum aims to promote economic collaboration and explore investment opportunities in Malaysia, with a focus on strategic initiatives for economic and fiscal growth.

On Tuesday, November 26, Anwar will deliver a keynote address at Seoul National University titled “Strategic Partners in a Complex World: Malaysia, Korea, and the Future of Asia,” underscoring the shared vision and collaborative potential of the two nations in the evolving Asian geopolitical landscape.

This official visit reaffirms the deep and enduring ties between Malaysia and South Korea, while paving the way for enhanced cooperation in education, sustainable development, and economic growth.
