Turkish, German Foreign Ministers Discuss Regional Crises and Strengthen Ties

Ankara, December 21, 2024 – The Europe Today: In a high-level meeting on Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock engaged in comprehensive discussions on pressing regional and international issues, underscoring their shared commitment to addressing humanitarian crises and fostering stability.

Minority Rights and Counterterrorism in Syria

Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s firm stance on protecting minority rights in Syria amidst the ongoing transitional period following the Assad regime’s fall. He strongly rejected claims equating the PKK/YPG terror group with Kurdish interests, emphasizing that such misrepresentations undermine regional peace.

“PKK/YPG and Daesh terror groups must never be allowed to exploit the current situation in Syria,” Fidan stated. “They must lay down their arms and dissolve themselves.” He highlighted the importance of robust counterterrorism measures to ensure a stable and inclusive future for Syria.

Urgent Call to End Genocide in Gaza

Turning to the crisis in Gaza, Fidan condemned Israel’s actions, categorizing them as genocide and urging the global community to act decisively.

“The genocide in Gaza must end. The global community must make joint efforts to achieve a ceasefire and bring stability to the region,” he declared.

The conflict, now in its 441st day, has resulted in the deaths of at least 45,206 Palestinians and injuries to over 107,512 others. Fidan also criticized Israel’s violations of the November 27 truce in Lebanon, where 4,047 people have been killed since October 2023.

Diplomatic Solutions for Ukraine and the South Caucasus

Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, advocating continued support for negotiation efforts.

On the South Caucasus, Fidan stressed the need for neutrality from third-party mediators to ensure a fair and lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“It is essential that all mediators act with neutrality and focus on lasting solutions,” Fidan noted, emphasizing Türkiye’s dedication to promoting stability in the region.

Strengthening Turkish-German Relations

The dialogue also explored avenues for enhancing Turkish-German cooperation, particularly in addressing shifting dynamics in Syria and the broader Middle East. Both ministers acknowledged the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling regional and global challenges.

The meeting underscored Türkiye’s proactive engagement in regional diplomacy and its call for international solidarity to address humanitarian and security crises, reaffirming its role as a key player in fostering peace and stability.
